Dear Students, Staff and Visitors,

Further to the email of 11 May sent by Professor Philip Clarke in his capacity as Acting Vice-Chancellor, I am writing to inform you that we are well prepared to manage Swine Flu at Deakin University if an outbreak were to occur. I am being advised by the Pandemic Influenza Planning and Response Team chaired by Professor John Catford, who was formerly Chief Health Officer for the Victorian Government and who has extensive experience of managing communicable disease outbreaks such as this. He is ably assisted by John Devereaux, Director of the Division of Student Life, Liz Stinson, Executive Director of Deakin International, and other senior managers across the University.

As the number of cases of Swine Flu in Victoria increases, it is increasingly likely that some Deakin staff and students will contract the disease. If there are confirmed cases of Swine Flu among staff or students, the Victorian Government Department of Human Services (DHS) will contact the University and advise us what additional steps to take at that time. Although unconfirmed cases are likely to be reported, only notification from DHS will be accepted as confirmation of a case of Swine Flu.

There is no reason for staff and students to be unduly concerned; common sense precautions are, however, advised. Please refer to the advice below and the information on Swine Flu provided by the University which can be found at http://www.deakin.edu.au/current-students/services/health/flu-health-alert.php

If a member of staff is advised by a student that he or she has a confirmed case of Swine Flu, the staff member should consider the student's needs in relation to study support, assessment, exams and special consideration. Please also pass the information on to the Division of Student Life via studentlife@deakin.edu.au.

If you have any general questions relating to the Swine Flu situation, please contact the Division of Student Life.

With kindest regards,

Sally Walker
Vice-Chancellor

What to do if YOU are experiencing flu like symptoms

If you experience flu like symptoms, you should:

  • Avoid contact with other people wherever possible
  • Stay at home
  • Call your doctor and explain your symptoms
  • Do NOT come to the University Medical Clinic without calling first (contact numbers can be found in the University bulletin referred to above)
  • Undertake good hygiene practices

Remember, while cold and flu medications (including anti-virals) may relieve the symptoms, you are still capable of passing on the infection and you should avoid contact with other people wherever possible.

What to do if you have been diagnosed by medical authorities to have Swine Flu?
OR
What to do if you have been instructed by medical authorities to stay at home in home quarantine/isolation?
