Since 1915, one day in the year has involved the whole of Australia in solemn ceremonies of remembrance, gratitude and national pride. That day is Anzac Day - April 25. The first Anzac Day Commemoration March in Melbourne was held on Anzac Day in 1916 when a few hundred returned servicemen marched from Princes Bridge to St Paul’s Cathedral for a service. The march continued in this format for a few years up until 1920, when no march was held as returned servicemen were unable to get time off work to participate. This remained the case until 1925 when, through the efforts of the RSL, the Anzac Day Act was proclaimed, declaring Anzac Day a public and bank holiday. The Anzac Day Commemoration March continues today when returned servicemen and women from WW2 and subsequent conflicts assemble in the City of Melbourne and march to The Shrine of Remembrance in tribute to their comrades.
